Mining and Proccessing

Considering the geometry and the position of the deposit close to the surface, a closed type open pit mining method will be applied for it's exploitation. An ultimate pit has been designed of a total 26 five-meter benches and wall's angle ranging from 37.5°-32° (east wall) to 31°-35° (west wall). The main characteristics of the pit are the following:

  • Open pit is not visible from Perama Village
  • Mining only on day shift, 8 hours per day
  • Open pit 550 meters long and 150 to 300 meters wide
  • Maximum depth 130 meters
  • Approximately 60% of the open-pit will be mined out by blasting, 10% by mechanical ripping and 30% by mechanical excavation

A hydrometallurgical process should be used for the Perama ore treatment, based on the principle of zero discharge of liquid effluents to the environment. The treatment process involves:

  • 3,288 tonnes per day, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Crushing and milling the ore in a closed circuit to less than 100 microns
  • Carbon in leach process in tanks
  • Gold is dissolved using Sodium Cyanide (NaCN) in a thickener tank
  • Gold is collected on carbon chips by exolution
  • Sodium cyanide is contained in the plant in closed circuit and reused over and over
  • Waste ground rock detoxified by the INCO SO2/air process to <1 ppm CN-
  • Thickening of the slurry and dewatering through filter press unit
  • Filter cake (dry stack- 85% s.w.) stored in Mine Waste Management Facility  (MWMF), which has a composite lining system bedding
  • Water from filter press units is recycled back to the Processing Plant
  •  Plant recovers 90% of the gold and 60% of the silver
